Djvu is software for compressing images that helps in transferring the documents to the web very easily and in a fast way without compromising on its quality because normally files containing the images are of very large size and the speed of downloading or uploading is limited. Djvu takes care of images of digital and scanned documents, photographs, etc., parts of some important magazines or any other documents can be scanned for easy transfer to the Internet.
This software is open standard software. The decoder implementations and specification of file formats can be taken from the Internet for use. GIF and JPEG are image compression techniques for color documents whereas TIFF is for black and white documents and the ratios of compression in this new Djvu are far better than those formats of compression.
The documents present in MBs now occupy hardly some KBs after compression. For same quality, this software compresses 5 to 10 times more than that of JPEG or GIF. PDF files containing images can also be compressed. There is a plug in that helps in using the zooming and planning facility of the images.
